Carson Demolition on Ground With a History
Carson is one of the youngest cities in Los Angeles County, incorporated on February 20, 1968, and demolition contractors in Carson are working on land with a long and sometimes complicated past. The city sits on part of Rancho San Pedro, the Dominguez land grant from 1784. Oil drilling began at Dominguez Hill in 1921, and the first producing well came in during 1923. By 2020 Carson had 95,558 residents, and about 76.8 percent of its homes were owner-occupied at the 2010 census, so most of the demolition we do here is for homeowners rebuilding or remodeling.
Why we dig carefully in Carson
Parts of Carson have well-documented contamination issues. In 2011 Shell was ordered to clean up the Carousel Tract neighborhood after benzene and methane were found, and the former stadium site off Del Amo Boulevard, once a toxic waste dump, needed extensive cleanup that the city set money aside for in 2015. That does not mean every lot has a problem. It does mean that when we break out slabs and footings, we watch for stained soil, odors or buried pipe and stop to assess them instead of pushing through. If a property has a known history, we want to see any reports before we quote.
What owners usually want removed
Houses in Carson are mostly single-family homes on slabs, many with attached or detached garages and long concrete driveways. Our common jobs are:
- Garage and slab removal for an ADU
- Full teardowns down to clean, graded dirt
- Interior demolition for kitchens, baths and open floor plans
- Pool, patio and block wall removal
Large former industrial sites
Carson has seen big site changes, like the 42-acre former Nissan headquarters with 13 buildings and about 700,000 square feet, vacated in 2006. Our focus is residential and small commercial work, but the lesson carries over: on any lot with an industrial past, we plan the dig and the disposal around what may be in the ground.
Weather and site conditions
Carson has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate with the ocean roughly 6 to 8 miles away, so mornings are often overcast with June Gloom and summer highs are milder than inland. January averages around 66 degrees for a high. That makes year-round demolition practical, but the dry season still means dust control, so we keep water on stockpiles and broken concrete.
Permits and notices
Before demolition, a certified asbestos consultant surveys the building and a South Coast AQMD notification goes in 10 working days ahead. Edison and the gas company disconnect service and the sewer is capped. Carson will host several events in the 2028 Olympics at the Dignity Health Sports Park complex, and we book disposal and trucking early so the job is not waiting on a truck. Carson Questions
What if you find contaminated soil while demolishing?
We stop work in that area, show you what we found and talk through testing and next steps. We do not haul suspect soil until it has been characterized.
Can you demolish just the inside of my Carson home?
Yes. Interior demolition of kitchens, baths and walls is common, and we protect the floors and rooms that stay.
Is the slab removed in a teardown?
For a rebuild, usually yes, so the new foundation can be designed properly. We break it out, haul it to a concrete recycler and grade the lot.
Does Carson weather slow demolition down?
Not much. Summer rain is scarce and the ocean keeps highs mild, around 78 degrees in August. Morning June Gloom can leave surfaces damp, but it usually clears by early afternoon.
